Celebrating the life of

Mark Wooding Thomas, III

March 21, 1952 - November 02, 2025

Mark Wooding Thomas, III

Mark Wooding Thomas III of Savannah, GA, passed away on November 2, 2025.

Mark was born in Savannah, GA, and was the son of Mark Wooding Thomas Jr. and Billie Fletcher. He was also greatly influenced by his Grandmother Dammer and his aunts, Maynee, Dot and Betty who all helped raise him and his brothers.

Mark was a proud graduate of the Savannah High School class of 1970 and an alumnus of Presbyterian College, 1974. While in Savannah, he worked at the Chatham County Tax Assessor’s Office and was always willing to lend a helping hand to the public.

Mark loved his church Wesley Monumental United Methodist Church and had been a member since his boyhood.  A Sunday school teacher for countless years to many youth at Wesley, he also served as the proud head coach of the multi-season, championship-winning, Wesley men’s softball team. He loved Wesley Gardens and often recounted innumerable memories spanning his entire life there.

Mark cheered relentlessly for his Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets, sometimes overzealously, along with all of his friends at the Mamalakis house. The beach was his second home. He loved: a Real Coke, a good recliner, fried chicken, The Andy Griffith show, a rare New York Strip, Ancient Aliens, Bob Dylan, The Beach Boys, games of all types, and sharing his food with his four-legged friends. His dislikes included: wastefulness and The Georgia Bulldogs.

Mark’s most proud achievement was his family, including his 5 grandchildren. He never failed to tell any of them how proud he was of them. He loved to tell them spooky stories, wrestle them and wind them up, and always enjoyed a game of first bounce with them. He was also very proud that he taught both of his daughters how to throw a pretty spiral.

Mark had a life changing stroke in August 2017. Since then, he has been a miracle, beating all odds. His family is so grateful for the 8 extra bonus years we had with him and is forever indebted to the countless people who loved, supported, visited and rehabilitated Mark.

Mark is preceded in death by his parents (obviously) because he was 73 years of age but also by his spunky and warm-hearted brother, Walter Thomas.

He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Marion Thomas; his two daughters Frances (Josh) Squyres of Los Angeles, CA and Katherine (Bryan) Donahue of Jupiter, FL; and five incredible grand-children: Bryce, Miller, JJ, Pansy and Cole. He is also survived by his brother, Bill Thomas of Amelia Island, FL; his favorite and only cousin, Steve Huggins of South Carolina; and his lifelong best friend Billy Bradley, who always lost to Mark in any competition.

In lieu of flowers, please donate to Wesley Monumental United Methodist Church. Go Jackets!

A visitation will be held from 5:00 pm until 7:00 pm on Wednesday, November 5, 2025 at the Fox & Weeks Hodgson Chapel. There will be a funeral service at 1:00 pm on Thursday, November 6, 2025 at the Fox & Weeks Hodgson Chapel.
